Precautions For Using Lap Flanges
Jul 28, 2025| A lap flange (also known as a slip-on flange) is a bolted, relatively rotatable flange structure. It is commonly used in piping systems where frequent disassembly or thermal expansion compensation is required. Its flexibility and convenience make it widely used in industries such as the chemical, petroleum, and power generation industries. However, the following precautions must be strictly observed during installation and use to ensure safety and reliability.
1. Material and Specification Matching
The material of the lap flange (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, or alloy steel) must match the working medium, temperature, and pressure rating of the piping system. Improper selection may cause corrosion, deformation, or leakage. Furthermore, the nominal diameter and pressure rating (such as PN10 or Class 150) of the flange must be identical to those of the pipe and fittings to avoid safety hazards caused by specification discrepancies.
2. Correct Installation Sequence
During installation, first insert the lap flange onto one end of the pipe, then connect it to the fixed flange (or equipment interface) at the other end. Bolts should be tightened diagonally, step by step, to ensure uniform force and prevent flange face deflection or gasket damage. Forcible assembly is strictly prohibited to avoid damage to the threads or sealing surfaces.
3. Gasket Selection and Maintenance
Select appropriate gaskets (such as rubber, graphite, or spiral wound gaskets) based on the media characteristics, and ensure that the gaskets are free of scratches, aging, or other defects. After extended use, regularly inspect the gaskets and replace them promptly if leaks or deformation are detected.
4. Anti-Loosening and Anti-Corrosion Measures
Bolts can loosen easily in high-temperature or vibrating environments. It is recommended to use spring washers or re-tighten them regularly. In outdoor or corrosive environments, flange surfaces should be treated with anti-corrosion treatment (such as anti-rust paint or galvanizing) to extend their service life.
5. Operation and Maintenance Specifications
During routine inspections, check for leaks and loose bolts at flange joints, and record operating parameters. Avoid violent impact during disassembly to prevent flange deformation. Store in a dry and ventilated area to prevent rust.
Following these precautions will effectively improve the safety and durability of lap flanges and ensure the stable operation of the piping system.
