Plate Flanges: Key Components in Industrial Pipeline Connections
Jul 29, 2025| Plate flanges are widely used in industrial piping systems, primarily connecting pipes, valves, pumps, and other equipment to ensure the sealed transmission of fluids or gases. Their simple structure and easy installation make them crucial in the petrochemical, power generation, shipbuilding, and mechanical engineering industries.
Plate flanges are typically made from sheet metal. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel, tailored to meet the corrosion resistance, high-temperature resistance, and strength requirements of various operating conditions. Depending on the connection method, plate flanges can be categorized into various types, including slip-on flanges, butt-weld flanges, and lap joint flanges. Slip-on flanges are suitable for low-pressure pipelines, while butt-weld flanges, due to their greater strength and sealing properties, are often used in high-pressure and high-temperature environments.
Plate flange connections primarily rely on bolted fastening, with sealing achieved through the interaction between the flange faces and gaskets. The choice of gasket material is crucial; common materials include rubber, graphite, and spiral wound gaskets to ensure reliable sealing performance under varying media and pressure conditions. Furthermore, the design of plate flanges must comply with international standards such as ASME B16.5 and DIN EN 1092 to ensure interchangeability and versatility.
In industrial applications, plate flanges offer the advantage of easy disassembly and maintenance, facilitating the inspection and modification of piping systems. However, their sealing performance is affected by factors such as installation quality, bolt preload, and gasket aging. Therefore, strict control of process parameters is required during installation to avoid leakage risks.
With advancements in industrial technology, plate flange designs and materials are continuously being optimized, such as the use of high-strength alloys or composite sealing technologies, to enhance their reliability in extreme environments. In the future, with the development of intelligent manufacturing and digital inspection technologies, the performance of plate flanges will become even more stable, and their application scope will further expand.
