Tips for Using Socket Weld Flanges

Socket weld flanges, as essential components in pipeline connections, are widely used in high-pressure, high-temperature, and high-vibration environments due to their compact structure and reliable sealing. Proper use of socket weld flanges not only improves system safety but also extends equipment life. The following summarizes practical tips covering three key aspects: installation, welding, and maintenance.

 

Precise Fitting Required During Installation

The tolerance between the socket weld flange and the pipe directly impacts weld quality. Before installation, strictly check the clearance between the flange ID and the pipe OD, typically within a range of 0.05-0.15mm, and ensure the insertion depth meets the standard (generally 1.25-1.5 times the pipe wall thickness). The flange sealing surface must be free of scratches, oil stains, and other defects. Fine sandpaper or a specialized cleaning agent is recommended. For alloy steel or stainless steel, care must be taken to avoid surface contamination from carbon steel tools.

Welding Technique is Key

Welding is recommended using GTAW (Gas Tungsten Inert Gas Arc Welding) or SMAW (Manual Metal Arc Welding), and control the heat input to prevent flange deformation. The preheating temperature should be adjusted according to the base material (for example, carbon steel generally does not require preheating, while chromium-molybdenum steel is recommended to be preheated to 150-200°C). The welding sequence should be symmetrical, and slag should be removed layer by layer during multi-layer welding. Pay special attention to the penetration of the root weld at the socket joint. Backfilling with argon shielding can improve weld quality.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting

Regularly check the tightness of the flange bolts. It is recommended to tighten them in diagonal order, using torque values ​​based on material specifications. If micro-leakage occurs after long-term operation, try tightening the bolts evenly. However, forceful tightening under high pressure is strictly prohibited. For applications with frequent disassembly, flange designs with locating bosses are recommended to reduce material degradation caused by repeated welding.

Mastering the above techniques can significantly improve the reliability of socket-welded flanges. In actual applications, process parameters should be adjusted based on specific operating parameters (such as pressure ratings PN16-PN40 and corrosive media).
