Technical Characteristics and Application Analysis of Threaded Flanges
Aug 30, 2025| Threaded flanges are pipe fittings that achieve pipe sealing through threaded connections. They are widely used in fields such as petrochemicals, machinery manufacturing, and building water supply and drainage. Their core advantage lies in their ease of installation without welding or bolting, offering both convenience and reliability. They are particularly suitable for low-pressure, small- and medium-diameter piping systems.
Structurally, a threaded flange consists of a flange plate and internal threads on the pipe end, achieving a secure connection through the precise fit of these threads. Common materials include carbon steel, stainless steel, and alloy steel. Stainless steel threaded flanges, due to their corrosion resistance, play a key role in the chemical industry. According to standards such as ANSI B1.20.1 or DIN 259/2999, thread dimensions and tolerances must be strictly matched to ensure sealing performance. Sealing methods typically employ polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) gaskets or spiral wound gaskets to accommodate the pressure requirements of different media.
At the application level, threaded flanges offer significant advantages. Their weld-free nature significantly reduces on-site installation complexity, making them particularly suitable for heat-sensitive piping systems. Furthermore, they offer greater flexibility for disassembly and maintenance, and are reusable. However, due to thread strength limitations, their applicable pressure generally does not exceed 16 bar, and they are not recommended for use in conditions subject to severe vibration. In recent years, advances in precision machining technology have further enhanced the sealing reliability of threaded flanges, with some products now certified for NPT (National Pipe Thread) or BSP (British Standard Pipe Thread), meeting international engineering requirements.
In the future, with advances in materials science, threaded flanges will continue to be optimized for lightweighting and extreme environmental resistance, while expanding their application in automated assembly, solidifying their importance in pipe connection technology.
